We needed to get out for a bit after being mostly home-bound for almost two weeks now. The bighorn sheep on the Madison River in Montana are almost a guaranteed sighting throughout the winter and this time of the year.

Bighorn sheep don’t lose their horns every year, unlike the antlers of moose and elk that are lost in winter/spring.

This sheep hard is usually an easy find since they spend a lot of time on or near the road, always in a couple of general areas. I usually see more ewes (female sheep) in this spot, but there were quite a few male rams this time too.

Bighorn rams licking the road, presumably for salt

There was even one yearling that seemed quite curious with me. His or her coat was still quite a bit lighter than the others.

Posing on the road

Only a couple cars went by while we were there, and most locals are aware that they will be in the road and slow down. If they aren’t in the road, they enjoy the nearby hills or sometimes chilling out in somebody’s yard.

Hope everyone is staying safe! It’s still snowing here as a write this, and there is still plenty of snow on the ground for this time of the year.
